Abstract
Due to results of Mukai, Bondal, Orlov, Bridgeland, and Kawamata, among others, the derived category (of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety) turns out to be a very useful invariant of a variety. In this talk, I will briefly introduce the framework of this invariant. This talk is aimed at graduate students of all levels. I will work through some basics of algebraic geometry, line bundles, sheaves and their cohomology in the first half of the talk. No technical knowledge of algebraic geometry is expected.
