Abstract

I shall introduce the theory of o-minimal structures as a possible rigorous framework for Grothendieck's idea of "tame topology". I shall present some of the main finiteness theorems for certain ("definable") subsets of Euclidean space and conclude with an application concerning the counting of rational points on transcendental analytic sets.
