Abstract
This presentation will review design issues for studies of HIV dynamics that use a nonlinear mixed-effects model. A method based on a first-order approximation, used for similar design issues in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, will be reviewed and discussed. Limitations of this method will be discussed and other methods will be described, including methods based on the exact calculation of the Fisher information matrix and Bayesian methods, which, although computationally intensive, provide alternatives.
