Abstract
This talk will start with several typical statistical learning problems, including handwritten recognition, DNA microarray analysis, and linear regression problem. Basic types of learning problems and relevant terminology will be described. Two classical approaches, nearest neighbor method and linear discriminant analysis, and their variants as well with applications to supervised learning problems are introduced. To overcome the curse of dimensionality, a newly developed statistical method based on permanent process will be discussed.
