Abstract

We will talk about the idea of a model-theoretic patterning property, a notion meant to capture properties such as OP, IP, TP, and SOP. Following recent work of Gabriel Day and Scott Mutchnik, we will discuss different proposals for making this idea precise: interpretation, Walsberg’s trace definability, García and Mennuni’s poset definability, and Shelah’s straight definability. We will compare these notions through examples and discuss what they capture and what they suggest about how model-theoretic patterns should be understood.
