Abstract

I will introduce and motivate the local Langlands program for p-adic groups starting from the perspective of understanding the absolute Galois group of the p-adic numbers. I'll explain why we might want to upgrade the Langlands correspondence to an equivalence of categories as conjectured by Fargues and Scholze and discuss what progress has been made in proving this conjecture.
