Abstract

Deep learning (DL) is the workhorse of modern machine learning. In practice, DL is a technological marvel. In theory, it poses a problem. Our current understanding of generalization—performance outside a model’s training data—does not adequately explain the success of DL. In this talk we'll go over what deep learning is, what theoretical results we know about its convergence and generalization, and how these results match up with what we see in practice.
