Abstract

We begin by covering some historical motivation for the Hilbert-Kunz function, namely Kunz's 1969 result that showed that flatness of the Frobenius endomorphism characterized positive characteristic regular local rings. We will then introduce the Hilbert-Kunz function, and discuss its properties and significance.
