Abstract
Two decades ago Kontsevich introduced the space of a stable maps in order to check enumerative predictions coming from string theory. We will sketch how to do this in the simplest possible example and, if time permits, mention some applications to birational geometry. No food will be provided, but there will be plenty of waffling.
