Abstract

A Fano variety is one with ample anticanonical class. I will prove a theorem of Mori that Fano varieties are covered by rational curves of bounded degree. The proof is a marvelous blend of methods geometric (the famous bend-and-break lemmas) and algebraic (reduction mod p).
