Abstract
I will recall the notion of a minimal algebraic surface and how one "runs the MMP" in the surface case. I will then outline the difficulties that arise starting in dimension $3$, state some of the basic structural theorems, and describe some of the ideas due to Mori, Shokurov, etc. which help to circumvent those difficulties.
