Abstract
The Navier-Stokes equations, known since the 19th century, describe the motion of a viscous fluid. They are used for many applications in science and engineering, such as modeling weather and designing aircrafts. However, fundamental mathematical questions about solutions to the equations remain unanswered, such as the question of the regularity of solutions, which is one of the Clay Mathematics Institute Millennium Prize problems. We will discuss the context, meaning, and challenges of the problem, as well as key concepts and results that have advanced progress toward answers.
