Abstract
Modular forms are functions on the upper half plane which obey a certain transformation law under the action of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. In this talk I will present basic definitions and mention a few applications. The study of modular forms is a vast and rich area of research. Questions and interests of the audience will be used to decide on a related topic for the second talk.
